As the year draws to a close, it is crucial for HR professionals and leaders to ensure their teams are not only finishing strong but also preparing for a well-deserved break.

Employee burnout is a significant concern, especially after a year filled with challenges and high-stress situations. One way to ease the workload and reduce stress is to adjust strategic plans. Take the time to reassess priorities and reprioritize tasks that may have been neglected or overlooked throughout the year.

By focusing on the most critical tasks and projects, you can ensure that they are completed effectively and efficiently. This will prevent employees from feeling overwhelmed with a long list of unfinished tasks and allow them to enter the new year with a fresh perspective.

Reprioritize non-strategic initiatives

In addition to adjusting strategic plans, it’s important to reassess non-strategic initiatives. Some tasks may have seemed important earlier in the year but may no longer hold the same urgency.

Take a critical look at the December calendar and identify tasks that can be deprioritized or eliminated altogether. By reducing the workload and focusing on essential tasks, employees can better manage their time and energy.

Offer time off

Counterintuitive as it may seem, offering time off during the holiday season can actually help alleviate stress and boost productivity. Give employees the opportunity to take a whole day, half-day, or even an extended lunch break to catch up on personal commitments and recharge.

By providing them with the mental and physical space to take care of their holiday responsibilities, they can return to work rejuvenated and better equipped to handle any remaining tasks or client situations.

Tap into gratitude reserves

Expressing gratitude and appreciation for your employees’ hard work can have a profound impact on their motivation and well-being. Take the time to recognize and acknowledge their accomplishments, not just during the holiday season but throughout the year.

Show them that their efforts have been noticed and valued. This can promote a sense of pride and satisfaction, leading to increased engagement and productivity.

Personalizing the gratitude is also important. Identify employees who have gone above and beyond throughout the year, particularly during the end-of-year rush. Consider offering personalized rewards that align with their interests or hobbies.

For example, if an employee has a passion for theatre, you could reward them with tickets to a local play. These tailored rewards show that you value their individual contributions and provide an extra incentive for continued high performance.

An unexpected bonus can also be a great way to show appreciation and motivate high-performing employees. Instead of waiting until the end of the year to thank them, consider surprising them with a bonus earlier.

This gesture can boost morale and provide an extra incentive to push through any end-of-year challenges. It’s a tangible way to express gratitude and recognize their hard work.

Pitch in

If you notice that your team is feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, consider stepping in and offering support. As a manager, you have the opportunity to lead by example and show your team that you are willing to roll up your sleeves and help out when needed.

By offering a helping hand and alleviating some of the workload, you can ease the burden on your employees and create a sense of camaraderie.

As a leader, it is important to be intentional about slowing down and reflecting on the past year. Take the time to acknowledge the challenges and successes, and look ahead with optimism. By projecting a calm and positive attitude, you can inspire your team and create a sense of hope and possibility for the future.
