Flexibility is shifting into an expectation amongst employees, not just a perk. Employees that have proven they can work productively from home will likely have serious questions about a mandated full time return to the office – even if they prefer to work there. On the other hand, organisations need to ensure that their people are present and available when needed. Employees need the balance between being listened to on what works best for them and having a firm idea of what options are available to them.

Organisations need to find the line in their policies between instruction and adaptability – it is the choice that is important. How do we make flexibility not just something that exists in our organisations in principle, but something that people are able to execute in their day to day?
