Hazel Hendley, HRD of the OS, outlines how her organisation successfully sourced highly specialised professionals and boosted staff numbers by 25%
Talent, from acquisition to development and retention, remains one of HR’s most resource-heavy functions. Technology, such as AI recruitment platforms, is widely perceived as creating positive change, but with trends such as the ‘great resignation’ in several parts of the world, many organisations continue to struggle to source top staff, particularly in highly specialised roles.
One exception to the rule is Ordnance Survey (OS), Great Britain’s national mapping agency and service, which has become a trusted data partner for sectors ranging from the emergency services to online food delivery.
At a time when the demand for highly specialised staff in data roles has reached a fever pitch, over the past 18 months the OS has managed to boost its staffing figures by 25%. It’s a notable figure, particularly when public sector bodies are often unable to pay the high salaries that data roles typically command.
What is it about the OS’s mission that has caused this rise in numbers? Culture, a focus on flexible working, or hiring beyond traditional sources?
According to Hazel Hendley, director of people of the OS, it’s a combination of factors, plus a firm commitment to developing teams within the organisation.
