Is there gender diversity in fintech?

With international women's day approaching, we look at the progress of gender balance in the fintech industry.

There is a growing number of women moving into the fintech sector, but is this happening quickly enough?

The ratio of female to males in senior positions, such as CEOs, remains low. In a male-dominated sector, is enough being done to encourage women into fintech? Do women see the opportunities a role in fintech could provide? This lack of gender balance can potentially have a negative impact on workplace morale, with research by Mckinsey finding that “Four in ten women in the UK lose the motivation to progress their careers due to the impact of ‘negative events’ at work, while over half report a fall in engagement levels”

When looking at the fastest growing industries for women from 1998 – 2018, Transport support has increased by 340%, Computer programming growing by 196%, and Head office Management by 191%, so although there may be a lack of ratio in positions such as CEO’s, it is positive that there are many industries and organisations looking to tackle this issue. In order to further improve the position of women in many industries, Sarah Kaiser, Employee Experience, Diversity & Inclusion Lead, EMEIA at Fujitsu offered her thoughts on what organisations can do “There are many steps that businesses can take to facilitate a diverse and inclusive work environment. One major factor preventing gender equality is the pipeline problem. If organisations are to address the low number of women in more senior-level positions the first step is to increase the pipeline of talent by driving recruitment of women at a graduate and apprentice level.

To further understand how much of an impact that gender balance is having in the Fintech industry. Bobsguide is researching and producing the definitive report on gender diversity as it stands in 2019. To inform the report and have your say on gender diversity, please take our short survey today. The findings of the report will be published in April.
