Pride 2018

  • 3 Min Read

This year’s theme for Pride 2018 is ‘Pride Matters’ which equates to every part of life be it personal or at work. In HR we say ‘bring your whole self to work’ but the harsh reality is that a lot of members of the LGBTQ+ community feel the exact opposite – this needs to change, now!

Bring Pride into your workforce

When you consider that more than a third of LGBT employees which is roughly 35% have actively hidden that they are part of the LGBTQ+ community at work for fear of discrimination.

Additionally, according to Stonewall, one in ten black Asian and minority ethnic LGBT employees have been physically attacked by customers or colleagues in the last year.

Pride in London carried out some research and have produced this year’s ‘Pride Matters Report’ some of the distressing statistics to come from this data shows that 1 in 3 LGBTQ+ have been verbally abused because of who they are, further to that over three quarters the LGBTQ+ community feel that they cannot show affection to their partner when in public.

This is obviously extremely alarming and something that HR can entirely help and educate the workforce about, we need to make this a universal topic that tops all people agendas going forward and isn’t just a ‘tick box exercise’.

In addition to this, according to Stonewall, 42% of trans people are not living entirely as their preferred gender because they feel it could directly impact or threaten their job – it’s 2018, this is not acceptable.
